State fears Godi will abscond, opposes his bail application

Prosecution has opposed bail application of former Arua Municipality MP Hussein Akbar Godi saying since he was already convicted of a grave offence he might abscond.

Principal State Attorney Vincent Wagona says since Godi was sentenced to 25 years in jail for murder he attempt to run away if released on bail.

In February this year, the High Court sitting in Mukono convicted and sentenced Godi to 25 years for murdering his wife Rehema Caesar.

He appealed against the said sentence saying the trial judge failed to evaluate properly the evidence on record thereby arriving at a wrong decision.

Godi wants court to release him on bail pending the hearing and determination of his appeal in the appellant court.

Godi’s lawyer Duncan Ondimu says disposing off of the appeal may delay, thereby necessitating the granting of bail to his client.

However the state says there is no evidence that hearing the appeal may delay.
