Africans join the world to mark international Labour Day but in Uganda only people in government offices attended

Millions of Africans together with their leaders on Tuesday joined the rest of the world to mark the international Labour Day. The day is celebrated every year on 1st May. Most African countries like Botswana, Ghana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Cameroon among others have celebrated the day in their respective capital cities.

We have been told that Southern Sudan, Northern Sudan, and Somalia have not marked the international Labour Day due to insecurity in those countries.

In Uganda the main celebrations of the International Labour Day have been held in Gulu district, in northern Uganda. The event has been presided over by the president of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. However the day was poorly attended. Most of the people who showed up at the function were from government ministries and departments. The members of the public scarcely attended the function.  The reason they gave was that most of them are unemployed and the government has failed to create them jobs.
