Tears and cheers at Uganda parliament

 

There were tears and cheers in Kampala today as parliament held a special session to pay tribute to fallen Uganda MP, Michael Oromait. Some legislators remained silent, others talked and some women sobbed as the body of Oromait entered parliament.

Some 314 MPs and hundreds of mourners gathered at parliament where the body of Oromait was put for public viewing. Every person who spoke in parliament today at least mentioned a sentence that his or her heart is broken over the death of Usuk county MP, Oromait.

The speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga says that the death of Oromait came to parliament as a surprise. Some MPs and members of the public allege that Oromait had diabetes and that it could have accelerated and killed him.

Oromait will be buried on Thursday at his home in Usuk after a series of different church services in Kampala, Jinja and Soroti districts. Oromait died at Katakwi Health Centre IV shortly after he was admitted there at 3am on Saturday.
