Profile: Coming face to face with Gen. Aronda, a man who puts on many huts

Today I spent over two hours at the ministry of internal affairs with Gen. Aronda Nyakairima. We were discussing a number of issues in his ministry. During our long discussion, I discovered more who Gen. Aronda Nyakairima is and I now bring his true face to you, my dear readers, I am Walakira Nyanzi.

President Museveni recently moved Gen. Aronda Nyakairima from the Chief of Defence Forces to the ministry of internal affairs as Minister of Internal Affairs. The president named him Army Commander in 2003 replacing late Maj. Gen. James Kazini.

Some of the members of staff I interviewed at the ministry of internal affairs told me that Aronda is naturally organised, calm and fearless as a lion. Aronda says he wants to ensure that there is no corruption at the ministry of internal affairs.

While he was still army commander, Aronda got reasons why the LRA war in northern Uganda had taken so long to end; one of the reasons was poor motivation of soldiers. The general made sure that soldiers have enough uniforms, paid in time and live in better conditions.

Gen. Aronda is a man behind the construction of Kakiri barracks, Kalama barracks, Kasenyi barracks, and Kimaka Senior Command Staff College Jinja- an internationally recognised military academy.

The general has cleaned the internal affairs ministry payroll and has improved on the services of the ministry during the shortest period he has served as minister.

Born in 1959, Aronda is the son of Mr Nyakairima of Rukungiri. He joined the Luweero triangle bush war in 1982 from MakerereUniversity.

Nyakairima attended a Basic Officers Course in 1989. He was also sent by Museveni to FortLeavenworth in Kansas, USA, where he studied a course in strategic studies. The general also attended the highly billed NasserMilitaryAcademy in Egypt.

Nyakairima received his secondary school education at KitgumHigh School where he learnt their language and culture.
