Book review: Major Kazoora pins Museveni on manslaughter

In a book titled ‘Betrayed By My Leader,’ Major John Kazoora was summoned by former minister for health, Jim Muhwezi during the early days of president Museveni’s regime and was told that they were going to arrest Dr. Andrew Kayiira, David Lwanga and Everesto Nyanzi. Why because they were reportedly planning a coup.

Major Kazoora was told to calm the population and explain why Dr. Andrew Kayiira, David Lwanga and Everesto Nyanzi were to be arrested.

Within days the trio were arrested and acquitted in Feb 1987. On the day of acquittal, President Museveni was returning from abroad and he held a press conference in Kampala.

Museveni was furious. He said that although the trio had been acquitted, he knew they were guilty of planning a coup against his (Museveni’s) regime. On 7th March the same year 1987, Dr Andrew Kayiira was gunned down. Strangely, this was within a month of his acquittal!

Major. John Kazoora in his book Betrayed By My Leader he says, ”in March 1987, I was coming from NamirembeChurch with President Museveni in a small convoy of about six cars. When we got to BugandaBusPark, the president stood up in his open roof to wave to the people. His then Principal Private Secretary (PPS) Lt. Col Serwanga Lwanga shouted at him to sit back down as he could be shot. The President said ” Gwe Sserwanga nvaako- Nabba kyani” meaning ” you Sserwanga leave me alone- whose property did I steal to be shot.”

Major Kazoora says Museveni now travels with a convoy of over 30 cars making him to wonder whose property he (Museveni) has now stolen.
