Private sector welcomes customs territory

Private sector players and the business fraternity welcomes the just launched single customs territory but demands that other partners like Tanzania and Burundi be brought on board.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya signed a Single Customs Territory for the three countries but President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi missed the third infrastructure summit in Kigali.

The Executive Director Private Sector Foundation Uganda Gideon Badagawa stresses that a development of this magnitude requires cooperation and involvement of all the EAC member states so as to attain the much desired regional integration.

He also says the member states should ensure smooth implementation of the single customs territory.

This while addressing Journalists ahead of the upcoming Northern Uganda Economic empowerment week starting the 4th – 11th this month at Lira Mayor’s gardens.

Badagawa says the development comes as PSFU moves to expose the war ravaged part of Northern Uganda to opportunities for business growth and investment.
He says government should do so by training people there, organize them in groups or co-operatives to unlock the region’s business potential.
