Member of parliament calls for the review free education policy

The chairperson of the Parliamentary Forum on Education Rosemary Sseninde has asked government to review the free education policy which she partly blames the poor quality of the service delivery in education sector .

Speaking at the Launch of the UWEZO report on the quality of primary education, Sseninde said that the mentality that education is free, that parents from taking their fully responsibility towards their children’s education.

Sseninde says in situations where parents have committed themselves to make partial payments to the education of their children, the responsibility of ensuring that the children learn is not only dependent on the teachers but also the parents.

Sseninde also attributes the poor quality of Education in schools to the government policies that cannot actually work for the education sector.

She mentioned the compulsory teaching of science subjects even in the areas without science laboratories, the policy on teaching local languages which is not applicable in urban centers where pupils of different ethnic groups go to the same school. She says that policies are frustrated by a number of factors like shortage of teachers and inadequate funding to schools.
