A new mining report released

A new report indicates that the three mining companies in Karamoja have violated the rights of indigenous people by excluding them from making decisions about the development of their land without their consent.

The report authored by Human Rights Watch titled ‘ How can we survive here? The impact of mining on human rights in Karamoja implicates mining companies East African Mining, Jan Mangal and DAO Uganda.

Human Rights Watch also found that donors including the World Bank are working to enhance the burgeoning mining sector without addressing people’s rights, including the right to development.

The report recommends that government and parliament amend the constitution to recognize indigenous people’s rights and those companies before mining implement vigorous procedures to consult with land owners.

Senior Researcher Human Rights Watch, Africa Division Maria Burnett presented the research findings in a press conference, at Makerere University.
