Electoral commission insists on holding mayoral elections

Erias Lukwago’s lawyers led by Abudul Katuntu have asked court for interim reliefs, to stop the electoral commission from organising the mayoral by-elections.

The lawyer’s move to seek court’s intervention in halting the forthcoming mayoral elections follow the recent roadmap the electoral commission released. The commission set April 17th 2014 as a date it would hold by-elections to fill the vacant position of the Kampala City Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.

The electoral commission chairman Eng. Badir Kiggundu says that sometime late last year his office received notification from KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi that the Lord Mayor’s position was vacant following the November 25, 2013 vote in which 29 councilors against three voted to remove him from office. Kiggundu says he has never received a contrary document on the same. In the application he filed about two weeks ago, Lukwago wants court to temporarily block the commission from organizing the mayoral by-elections until his main application in which he is challenging the KCCA Tribunal report that found him guilty of abuse of office, incompetence and misconduct is determined.
