2209 boys failed in A-level exa

The Uganda National Examinations Board has released the 2013 UACE results indicating that girls this time floored boys in performance.
The gals not only floored the males in arts subjects but also in terms of appearing for exams after registration though the boys did well in science subjects and maths.
The results released by education and sports minister Maj. Jessica Alupo indicate that even in failure rate, the boys performed exceptionally after garnering 2209 failures out of the 3072 total number of students who failed UACE.
The girls here secured 863 failures out a total number of gals [46,084] who sat while boys in total were 68262 but 2209 got failures.
In absenteeism aspects, still boys did poorly as they registered the highest number of absentees compared to girls.
Mathew Bukenya; UNEB executive secretary says the overall performance of candidates in 2013 shows that a very high percentage of candidates [97.3%] qualified for the award of the UACE.
He says at the 2 principal passes level, the minimum pass level considered for admission to university, 61479 candidates qualify for admission.
He adds that if other tertiary institutions are considered where 1 principal pass and 2 subsidiary passes are considered for admission, 88975 [77.8%] will qualify for admission compared to 65417 candidates in 2012, adding that results for 34 students are still being held by UNEB on suspicion of exam cheating.
Meanwhile, Alupo said last year’s performance has shown a great improvement especially now that girls performed better.
She also said that government was had embarked on a process of providing science labs and computers in various schools across the country with a view of improving on performance of students in science-related subjects and ICT.
Alupo encouraged the s.6 leavers to join vocational and technical training education because this area is now getting a lot of attention from government more than ever before and that such training has got ready market/jobs.
BEST DISTRICTS
Wakiso district scored the highest number of ‘first graders’. It got 7220 candidates who got 3Ps, followed by Kampala which got 5607. In the 3rd position was Mukono which got 2774 followed by Luweero which got 922. Jinja followed with 878, Buikwe with 824, Mbarara with 783, Masaka with 732, Kabale with 711 and Mpigi which got 618.
