20,000 girls below 18 years give birth

 

Globally 20,000 girls below the age of 18 give birth daily. This statistics is contained in the State of the World Population Report of 2013.

 

The Republic of Uganda has a population of 48% comprising of young people less than 15 years.

Uganda has the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Africa standing at 24 percent. Studies show that over 70,000 adolescent girls die every year from complications related to pregnancy and child birth.

 

The causes of teenage pregnancies in African countries like Uganda are linked to early sexual exposure, forced girl child marriages and poverty. Studies by UNFPA show that over 49% of girls in Uganda get married before 18 years.
