Deputy speaker urges mps to focus on quality that transforms uganda

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has warned that if Uganda is to attain fully transformation, there is need for decision makers to refocus on the nature of debates they engage.

Oulanyah says that the country needs to move away from concentrating on political debates that focus on small constituency issues instead of analyzing and debating matters of National Importance.

H e expressed his disappointment on the quality of debate by majority of the MPs in the current and recent past parliaments, saying the level of debate cannot elevate the country to the next level

Speaking short after his trip from France where he visited the French Senate, Oulanyah says that people’s representatives are supposed to well informed and able to articulate matters of national importance that eventually impact on the entire population.

Oulanyah also noted that the country of 35 million people is over represented. He said that big number of lawmakers in parliament does not come with the expected output.

Turning to the Media practitioners Oulanyah said scribes have a role to play to improving the quality of debates in the national Assembly by critiquing and challenging lawmakers regarding their work.

Oulanyah has also criticized the high interest rates in the country saying this portrays poor economic policies.

Oulanyah says the interests rates by the commercial banks are unacceptably too high which calls for thorough debate by lawmakers and engagement of the sector players in order to help the proper management of the economy.

He attributed the problem of high interest rates and other economic challenges to over liberalization of the country that has left government with no control over the economy.

Talking about the country’s economy, the Omoro County MP said that in Uganda there no serious investors that would come in with the capital. He said the purported investors instead get the funds from within the country to facilitate their business ideas.
