health activists demand lawfor patients rights

In a bid to improve on the quality of health and health services
delivery Uganda national health users and consumers organization is
lobbing parliamentarians and stake holders to come with a law that
can be used as a legal frame to address the rights of patients and
the health workers.
According to the executive director for national health users and
consumers organization Robinah Kaitiritimba they are lobbing MP s to
come with a private members bill in parliament that can be used as an
instrument by the health workers to demand for payment when their
salaries are delayed.
In a meeting with MPs at golf hotel in Kampala Robinah said that
right now the health workers don’t have any instrument to seek redress
when their salaries is delayed ,noting that with such a frame work
they can be able to take government to court instead of striking when
their salary is delayed.
She said that if there is such a frame work, then patients can also be
able to seek redress in court case of any problems pertaining to the
rights.
She notes that although the right to health is mentioned in the
preamble of the constitution, it’s not enforceable therefore need for
a guideline between the clients and those who provide health services.
She said her organization together with ministry of health to came up
with a patients chatter but believe a bill on the chatter that become
a law would enforce it.

Meanwhile Member of Parliament for kiboga east Kabajo Kyewalabye baked
the idea to have the frame work to solve the challenges facing service
delivery than what is happening now in the country
