Read Nelson Mandela’s book on Uganda, details in story

Late Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa one day said ‘you can’t know a country until you visit its prisons.’ Our reporter Walakira Nyanzi and his two other friends, Kaija Harold, the private secretary of Col. Kizza Besigye and former MP Augustine Ruzindana went to Luzira prison to visit former Arua Municipality MP Akbar Godi.

Former MP Godi was imprisoned for 25 years after the court in Kampala found him guilty of murdering his wife, Rehema Godi. The court sentenced Godi after the prosecution produced evidence that Godi shot his wife thrice and she died.

Walakira Nyanzi, Kaija and Augustine Ruzindana were surprised when they visited Godi and they found out that the number of people who were carrying one bar of soap or a Kilo of sugar to prisoners were too many. This showed them that people cared for their people locked up in Uganda prisons but could not afford to provide a lot.
