Defence minister says UPDF is investigating rape accusation against soldiers in somaliaa

Parliamentary committee on Defence and Internal affairs has questioned Defence Minister Crispus Kiyonga on allegations that Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Somalia is raping Somali women.

The report farther alleges that several UPDF officers have been deported for raping Somali women which they said it’s a human rights violation and wanted an explanation from the Minister.

Dr Kiyonga in response said they are always looking out for cases of indiscipline and in the event of breach, are handled according to the UPDF Act and code of conduct.

Kiyonga farther admitted that there is also a case of a soldier who is alleged to have defiled a Somali girl, was arrested, deported and is under trial in court martial and promised to take seriously the findings of human rights watch following its report which indicated Ugandan troops serving under AMISOM raped and sexually assaulted women in Somalia.

Kiyonga also told Parliament that UPDF is in the process of introducing Court Martial outside Uganda where there is any disputed mission saying such cases of that nature will be tried within the population abroad so that evidence is adduced accordingly.
