women mps question police independence in investigating cases

Women MPs under the Uganda women parliamentary association (UWOPA)
have questioned the independence of Director of Public Prosecution and
police in investigating cases of domestic violence and murder.
The chairperson of UWOPA who is also the Oyam south MP Betty Among
during a press conference at parliament alleges that DPP and police
handle cases where they have interest and leave others in shelves to
why the public has lost trust in the independence of police due to
selective investigations.
The angry Among cited out the case of Jacqueline Uwera Nsenga who
murdered her husband in Bugolobi that police has rapidly investigated
the case because they had interest in the case but so many others
cases in the same category police has ignored.
She said that in 2012/13 23497 cases of defilement were reported to
police for investigation but 6238 mentioned in court and only 334 were
concluded while others were ignored because DPP had no interest in
them.
She further urged DPP and police to also investigate and conclude
cases for the poor in the manner the case of Uwera Nsenga was handled.
