Minister Byabagambi says UNRA roads are not good due lack of beetter equipments

State minister for works John Byabagambi has admitted that district roads are better than those of UNRA but attributed it to lack of equipments by this entity.

He was adds that much as several roads which formerly belonged to local governments were some time back taken over by UNRA on the directive of the president, funding to UNRA was only increased by shs50bn, making it difficult to work on all roads.

Byabagambi who had appeared before the parliamentary committee on physical infrastructure chaired by Ephraim Biraaro was grilled by members who suggested that even community roads in their constituencies are better than those of UNRA yet the entity is supposed to work on major roads to ease movement.

Byabagambi says much as UNRA is being blamed for the slow action, the entity lacks equipments unlike local governments which were given road equipments to maintain their roads.

He says UNRA currently relies on private contractors which makes road construction very expensive because the equipments it has are obsolete after having been inherited from ministry of works.

Byabagambi says in an effort to improve on UNRA efficiency, equipments such as graders, tippers and others are being procured and that by the end of this financial year, there will be 24 graders procured by UNRA though procurements of the same will continue so that roads are improved on a regular basis.
