Opposition parties have formed an alliance to field a single presidential candidate and joint candidates for all elective positions in the country ahead of 2016 general elections. The Democratic Alliance for Unity bringing in all opposition political parties, pressure groups and eminent persons in Uganda was signed by the various party leaders Wednesday 10th June, 2015.

While presenting details of the protocol that will also see the opposition parties and pressure groups form a government for National Alliance once voted into power, the Justice Forum President Asuman Basalirwa says the formation of Democratic Alliance came as a result of demand for free and fair elections ahead of 2016 elections. He says under the alliance, the parties have agreed to field a single candidate for the presidency and joint candidates for other elective positions across the country.

Basalirwa says the process of fielding a single candidate and joint candidates will be managed by the National Candidates Committee that will soon be set by the Summit. The summit is expected to sit in a weeks’ time to come up with modalities that will be used by the alliance to operate so that it can win elections in 2016.

The former President of Forum for Democratic Change Kizza Besigye says the leaders should work hard to see that the demand of Ugandans for free and fair elections is realized before elections.
