Government to keep UPDF troops in South Sudan

Government said that the UPDF troops will continue to be in South Sudan despite Members of Parliament’s fresh demand for the withdrawal of the troops. Ugandan troops were deployed to South Sudan in December 2013 but on several times have ignored pleas from MPs, mediators and the international community to withdraw its troops from the conflict.

While in parliament the Member of Parliament for Aswa county Regan Okumu  asked government the reason to why it is not withdrawing from South Sudan since the troops of South Sudan were attacking civilians in Lamwo and Moyo  districts. However, the Prime Minister Dr.Ruhakana Rugunda said that the UPDF will continue to be in South Sudan as they wait for regional forces to replace them.

Fighting broke out on the night of December 15th, 2013 which led to Ugandan troops deployed in South Sudan after fighting erupted between soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir and his ex-deputy, Riek Machar
