Electoral Commission launches a Voter Education Module

The Electoral Commission has launched a voter’s education module that’s to guide and empower the citizens to exercise their rights and participate in the electoral process. The manuscript compiled by Civic Education Coalition in Uganda (CECU) that is to be translated into 17 major local languages is to create awareness of the procedures and relevant laws in all electoral activities.

The chairman CECU Steven Nyabongo said it is to be used in voter education, they want to allow the people to have peaceful elections which will bring able leaders in place that will look at the people interests. Nyabongo however said as civil society they are against the upcoming militia groups that are being trained as crime preventers all in the name of protecting votes.

CECU is to discuss this with the concerned parties which have already started since some of these groups are illegal and expect government to take action because they are being trained by individuals like Kakooza Mutale.

The chairman electoral commission Eng Badru Kigundu said he has heard about the militia groups and is in discussion with the Ministry of internal affairs and other security authorities to make sure they are identified and something is done before the general election. Kiggundu has however cautioned media houses to avoid announcing results before they are being owned by the electoral commission.
