Fake salt found on the market in Amuru

SaltKilak county Member of Parliament in Amuru district Gilbert Oulanya has tabled before parliament pieces of fake salt being sold to people which opened u MP’s eyes, calling for more scrutiny for the goods flowing into Ugandan market. He told parliament chaired by Rebecca Kadaga that this salt is being imported from Kenya and sold to the people in Amuru district in the northern shops. Oulanya said that this salt could be dangerous to the human health and could cause cancer to the people. He reported that this fake salt does not dissolve in water when used.

The Member of Parliament for Buyaga East Barnabus Tinkasiimire says that government agencies fighting fake products should take up their role and stop such goods on market because could be the reason why cancer cases are going up.

The minister of trade Amelia Kyambadde said that she is going to instruct the Uganda Bureau of standards to investigate the matter of alleged fake salt. She however admitted that such cases of fake products like salt on Ugandan market are due to lack of officers to enforce standards in the country.

The minister of state for health Dr. Baryomunsi says that the ministry of health experts are going to subject this alleged fake salt products to testing and find out the exact answer. He urged the public to remain calm as the matter is investigated further.
