drivers badges launched

The works and transport ministry has today officially launched badges
that will be issued to all heavy duty drivers with the intension to
reduce road carnage as those issued with the badges will be subjected
to thara training by face technologies and the transport licensing
board.

Speaking at the launch of the badges in Kampala, the works and
transport minister, Abraham Byandala states that and driver of a heavy
duty vehicle found driving without the badges will be subject to years
in jail or pay a fine of UGX.200,000 or both.

The commissioner traffic, Stephene Kasiima adds that this will help
reduce on accidents on Ugandan roads.

He also notes that they are starting with bus drivers and will proceed
to have lorry and taxi drivers then to boda boda riders with foreign
drivers not to be left out of this process.

Bus owners and drivers have welcomed the initiative but are still
optimistic that the initiative will not fully reduce road
carnage..

A driver has to go for week training in defense driving before
acquiring the badges.
