mps press for a seperate labour ministry to deal with unemployment

Mps on the parliamentary committee on Gender labour and social Development have demanded the cabinet and the president to speed up the creation of the ministry of Labour and Employment to work on the issues of labour and challenging growing youth unemployment .
Mps say that lack of a separate labour ministry is violating the guidelines of the International labour organization.
The committee chaired by the woman member of parliament for Nakasongola district Margaret Komuhangi while meeting the ministers Mary Karoro Okrut , Mwesigwa Rukutana , Ronald Kibule ,Rukia Nakadama and the permanent secretary in the Gender, labour and Social Development Pius Bigirimana quizzed them why the ministry of labour has delayed to be declared independent to comprensively deal with labour issues.
Mps , Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Margret Komuhangi and Betty Ahimsibwe said that labour ministry should be separate because its over shadowed by the ministry and its matters are not given attention since its under the ministry of Gender.
The vice chairperson of this committee who is also workers mp Arinaitwe Rwakajara said that in other East African states and world over country which are members of the International labour organization , labour ministry is independent.
Rwakajara said that if this ministry is not created to work on labour issues affecting labour force and youth unemployment, country can face instability because of labour sector redundancy.
The committee directed gender ,labour and Social Development minister together with the permanent secretary Pius Bigirimana to arrange an interface with president with mps to demand the ministry creation.

However , the minister of state for Labour Mwesigwa Rukutana supported the mps proposal to have a stand-alone ministry of labour and said that its creation lies in the hands of the president.

The minister of Gender, labour and social Development Mary karoroOkrut and the ministry permanent secretary Pius Bigirimana said that parliament should wait for cabinet paper on this matter because the creation of this ministry will need a certificate of financial implication.
