Electoral commission warns against early campaigns

Electoral Commission is asking Parliament to put a law in place which will empower them to punish and arrest people who engage in early campaigns in any elective office.

Electoral Commission Chairman Eng. Badru Kigundu while before the Committee of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs said it’s becoming hard for the commission to take action to such people when there is no enabling law to take action.

Kigundu’s concern came after Members on the Legal Committee tasked the Commission to do stop people who are going around campaigning when electoral commission has not declared official dates to do so.

Kigundu asked Committee members to work together with the commission to come out with a law that will guide such activities and what remedies can be taken in case one does not follow the set criteria.

However it’s not yet clear whether the law once put in place will affect President Museveni who has been declared sole candidate by NRM party come 2016 and campaigns are going on before the official date.
