Members of parliament under the Parliamentary forum on disaster risk reduction and mitigation have asked government to allocate 30 billion shillings to desilting of Nyamwamba River in Kasese which has claimed lives of people when there is a heavy rain.

MPS together with the Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group   want government to increase the budget allocation on disaster response and management as way to protect Ugandans against floods.

The chairperson of the forum Alex Byarugaba says that even though government has allocated 77 billion shillings to the contingency fund, the proposed allocation is below the 0.5 percent stipulated in the public finance management act .

Byarugaba says that they know government faces budget constraints but its important to respect percentages towards disaster response as this is an important aspect that needs to be tackled.
