The long awaited Anti corruption bill 2013 that seeks to amend the
Anti-Corruption Act, 2009 which has been criticized for not being
sufficient to fight corruption will be ready for parliament to debate in
two weeks time as soon as the house returns from recess.

The chairperson of the legal affairs committee scrutinizing the bill
Stephen Tashobya, said that the bulk of the work has been done and a number of stake holders have given their views on bill and it has been supported overwhelmingly.

Tashobya however said that the committee is still studying similar laws
from other countries in order to handle the issue of confiscation of
property of those who will be caught stealing public funds properly.

The private members Bill was tabled by Makindye East Member of Parliament,John Ssimbwa.

If passed into law, the Bill would provide the government with binding
powers to confiscate property of people convicted of corruption by the Anti Corruption Court.

The Bill comes at a time when cases of corruption are rising and when donor countries suspended aid to Uganda citing corruption in various government
departments.
